'Hau wahine' - (soft breezes)
Hau wahine is one of five works in the series titled “Te Hau Kaika” (The winds of home).
These works tell the story of Ranginui and Papatuanuku. The Maori myth of creation tells of how heaven and earth were once joined as Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother, lay together in a tight embrace. They had many children who lived in the darkness between them. The children wished to live in the light and so separated their unwilling parents. Ranginui and Papatuanuku continue to grieve for each other to this day. Rangi's tears fall as rain towards Papatuanuku to show how much he loves her. When mist rises from the forests, these are Papa's sighs as the warmth of her body yearns for him and continues to nurture mankind.
Hau wahine incorporates the modern medium of the hybrid print, with materials of old, to narrate ancestral stories. Using materials such as finely ground charcoal harvested from the land, rolled monoprint and detailed line work. Revealing the Kā Tiritiri-o-te-Moana, The Southern Alps.
My artistic processes are often influenced by the sombre and contemplative black protest paintings of Ralph Hotere. With work often depicting braided rivers as shadow water or ata wai. Using black on black printing methods as a dual representation for memory and of the depletion / pollution of water resources in the agricultural district of Waitara (Canterbury).
